To get to Garzon you must first fly into a capital city you’ve likely never heard of (Montevideo, Uruguay). From there, a 2 hour car ride takes you through endless plains and country roads to a sleepy village of 200 year around residents which comes to life in January and February. People (in the know) travel here from around the world to relax, visit the village’s art galleries and eat & drink at Bodega Garzon and Francis Mallmann’s famed Hotel Garzon. The village is in a near constant struggle between rustic simplicity and opulent luxury. Neither side can seem to win.
Here, gauchos still roam the hills on horseback moving cattle from one plain to the next. Lamb can often be found slowly cooking on a cross in a quiet backyard. Some homes are large and some are small. Some are filled with laughter, wine, and family, while others are mostly dormant, patiently waiting for their owners to return in December. It’s a complicated place and it takes years to really understand the magic that is happening here.
This 4 night, 5 day trip will tour guests through Garzon and the Uruguayan countryside. Guests will be treated to horseback riding, local home visits, wine tastings, and gallery tours. This trip will be a very personal and intimate experience for folks that are interested in making new friends and learning about this special part of the world.
The Hosts
Nicole Tuvi was born and raised in Montevideo and first moved the the Village of Garzon in 2014 to work for Francis Mallmann’s famed “Restaurant Garzon.” She eventually became the restaurant’s general manager and then spent years traveling around the world to oversee the development and openings of new Mallmann Restaurants. Over the decade plus of living and working in Garzon, Nicole built deep contacts within the community and eventually built herself a home and made a family with her husband William Hereford. Nicole now owns and operates “Canteen,” a village restaurant and Inn located a few blocks from her alma mater.
William Hereford first visited the village of Garzon in 2021 while photographing Mallmann’s book “Green Fire.” While on that assignment Francis invited William to stay an extra week which he spent cautiously courting his now wife, Nicole. Soon after, William left his commercial clients and life in New York City and moved to Garzon full time where he now works as a fine art photographer, teacher, and father to their daughters Edda & Lilly.
